Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima is an action-adventure game developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2020. The player takes on the role of Jin Sakai, a samurai tasked with defending Tsushima Island during the first Mongol invasion of Japan.

Throughout the game, players must choose between adhering to the samurai code of honor or utilizing more practical but morally ambiguous tactics to defeat the invading forces with fewer casualties. The game’s open world can be explored on foot or by horseback, with players engaging in either direct combat using Jin’s katana or stealth tactics as “the Ghost”.

In October 2020, a multiplayer mode called Ghost of Tsushima: Legends was released, and in September 2021, it became available as a separate game. Sucker Punch Productions began development on Ghost of Tsushima after releasing Infamous: First Light in 2014. The studio wanted to create a game with an emphasis on melee combat that differed from the Infamous franchise.

To ensure cultural and historical authenticity, Sucker Punch collaborated with Japan Studio and visited Tsushima Island twice during the game’s development. The team was inspired by samurai cinema, especially Akira Kurosawa’s films, and the comic book series Usagi Yojimbo. The game’s minimalistic art style and landscape were influenced by Shadow of the Colossus, and locations were designed to be picturesque.

While the game’s landmass is similar in shape to Tsushima Island, it was not intended to be a one-to-one recreation. Ilan Eshkeri and Shigeru Umebayashi composed the game’s soundtrack.

Ghost of Tsushima Plot

In 1274, the Japanese island of Tsushima is invaded by a Mongol fleet led by Khotun Khan. Lord Jin Sakai, a local samurai, and his uncle Lord Shimura lead a failed attempt to repel the invaders, resulting in the death of the samurai, the capture of Shimura, and severe injuries to Jin.

He is rescued and revived by a thief named Yuna, who informs him of the island’s fall to the invaders. Realizing that traditional samurai tactics are ineffective against the Mongols, Jin embarks on a journey to recruit allies and learn guerrilla warfare tactics.

Jin’s allies include Yuna, her brother Taka, sake merchant Kenji, master archer Sadanobu Ishikawa, female samurai Masako Adachi, and mercenary friend Ryuzo and his Straw Hat rōnin. Jin earns the moniker “The Ghost” as he disrupts Mongol activities and liberates villages. Taka crafts a grappling hook to help Jin scale Castle Kaneda’s walls, which he and his allies attack.

However, Ryuzo and the Straw Hats betray Jin, hoping to collect the bounty on his head offered by Khotun. Jin manages to fend off the traitors, free Shimura, and retake Castle Kaneda. However, Khotun and Ryuzo have already left to conquer Castle Shimura. Jin recruits Norio, Norio’s warrior monks, the Yarikawa Clan, and local pirate Goro to retake the castle. Jin also recovers his family’s ancestral armor and learns to create poison.

However, he is ambushed and captured by Khotun when he attempts to infiltrate a fortress with Taka. Khotun kills Taka, and Jin escapes with Yuna’s help. The Shogun’s reinforcements arrive, and Shimura leads an assault on Castle Shimura, driving the Mongols into the inner keep.

Realizing that a frontal attack will only result in more losses, Jin decides to infiltrate the keep and sneak poison into the Mongols’ airag. He kills Ryuzo when he refuses to surrender but misses Khotun again. Despite the castle being taken without further losses, Shimura is furious with Jin for violating the samurai code of honor.

He urges Jin to use Yuna as a scapegoat, but Jin refuses and is arrested for treason. Jin escapes captivity with the help of his allies but loses his horse in the process. He learns that the Mongols have learned to craft his poison, intending to use it in their assault on the Japanese mainland.

Jin gathers his allies and assaults Khotun’s final stronghold in Port Izumi, leaving a note for Shimura to join them. Jin infiltrates the port and kills Khotun on his flagship. With Khotun dead, the Mongol invasion loses momentum, and the tide turns in favor of the samurai. Shimura informs Jin that the Shogun considers him a threat and has disbanded Clan Sakai, ordering Shimura to kill Jin.

Jin and Shimura reluctantly duel, with Jin emerging victorious. Jin has the option to either kill Shimura or spare his life, resulting in him becoming an enemy of the Shogun
